Academic excellence

Study Programs

Academic programs grounded in two decades of institutional partnership.

RoamBeyond has run academic programs in the Himalaya for over two decades. We began working with Antioch University on Buddhist studies in Sikkim in 2000, a partnership that continues today. In 2005 we helped Loyola Marymount University establish a full-semester program in Sikkim. Each program is designed with the institution, and can include lectures by lamas and scholars, language instruction, homestays, field visits, and independent study. Themes include Buddhism and comparative religion (for example our Kolkata–Darjeeling–Sikkim program), Himalayan ecology and conservation, sustainable tourism, Tibetan culture, tea and local economies, and community development. Programs can run from short field courses to a full semester, and can extend into Bhutan and Northeast India.

Green Lake

Eight days beyond the last road, through rhododendron forest and glacial moraine, to the foot of the world's third-highest mountain. Beginning in the old Sikkimese capital of Yuksom, the Goecha La trek leads you into one of the Himalaya’s great wildernesses, within the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over twelve days on the mountain you follow the roaring Ratang Chu through moss-draped forest of magnolia, rhododendron and orchid, and climb steeply to…

Sandakhpu Trek

Few journeys put the Himalaya so close in front of you. The Singalila Ridge runs along the border between India and Nepal, and for four days you walk along its crest, with the mountains filling the horizon. At its high point, Sandakphu, Everest, Kanchendzonga, Lhotse and Makalu stand together in one great snow-covered arc, so…
