Himalayan Studies with Roam Beyond

Learning that begins where the classroom ends.

We work across Sikkim, Darjeeling, Bhutan and Northeast India, regions of deep spiritual and cultural significance, where Buddhist wisdom, mountain traditions and everyday hospitality shape a way of life found nowhere else. Pedagogical Framework

Programs built around your institution

For over twenty years we have designed programs for universities, colleges, schools, cultural centers and companies. We do not hand out a fixed itinerary. We begin with your learning goals, your course requirements, your group size, your calendar and your budget, then build the program around them. A Buddhist studies seminar, a semester-abroad module, an independent study, a leadership retreat and a corporate immersion each get their own design, their own pace and their own people on the ground.

01 / Seminar

Buddhist Studies Seminar

Deep exploration into philosophical texts, Nalanda and Tibetan traditions, monastery archives, and dialectical debate sessions in living hermitages.

Target: Undergraduate & Graduate

02 / Field Semester

Semester-Abroad Module

Accredited multi-week modules incorporating high-altitude ecology, sacred geography, environmental resilience, and vernacular anthropological fieldwork.

Duration: 3 to 4 Weeks

03 / Research

Independent Study & Research

Facilitated individual researcher immersion with native language translation mentors, monastery library entry, and custom field mentorship.

Structure: 1-on-1 Faculty Mentorship

04 / Leadership

Leadership & Corporate Immersion

Mindful deceleration, ethical governance based on Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness matrix, and high-altitude organizational resilience retreats.

Format: Executive & Institutional

Institutional Partnerships

Trusted by respected institutions

We have collaborated with colleges and institutes in the United States and beyond, including Loyola Marymount University (California), Antioch University (Ohio), Castleton College (Vermont) and the Arya Tara Yoga Center (Lerida, Spain). Many of these partnerships have continued over repeated visits, which says more about our programs than any brochure could.

Daniel A. Hirshberg, PhD Associate Professor, Centre for Asian Studies, University of Colorado, Boulder, USA.

I believe that any institution that chooses to partner with Mr. Pema and Roam Beyond would be in very good hands.

Sienna R. Craig Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor in Asian Studies Department of Anthropology South House Professor Dartmouth College USA.

Mr Pema Topgyal’s excellent command of English, Tibetan, Hindi and Nepali were very valuable assets during our entire visit in Kolkata, Darjeeling and Sikkim. He arranged every detail of our program with precision and creativity and made sure every detail of our program were carried out with perfection. Working with Mr Topgyal was a fabulous learning and rewarding experience for all.

Jim Hagan Adjunct Professor, Castleton College, Vermont, USA

I want to thank you once again for all the arrangements that you have made in order to make our students' independent studies successful

Pedagogical Methods

How students learn

Each program draws on some or all of the following:

Pillar 01 / Immersion

Homestays

Live with a local family and join in household routines, shared meals and conversation. This is the quickest way to understand family life and social customs from the inside.

Authentic Village Living · Shared Meals · Cultural Fluency

A student at the hearth with a host family, sharing butter tea.

Pillar 02 / Creative Practice

Art classes

Learn painting, pottery or traditional crafts alongside local artisans, and discover the meaning behind their techniques.

Mineral Pigments · Woodcarving · Living Sacred Heritage

Pigment preparation and brushwork with a master painter.

Pillar 03 / Linguistics

Language classes

Pick up practical phrases along with the idioms, expressions and etiquette that open doors to real conversation.

Dialects: Dzongkha · Sikkimese · Nepali

Pillar 04 / Sacred Geography

Trekking

Walk through diverse ecosystems, remote villages and sacred landscapes, and see how people and place shape each other.

Terrain: High-Pass Trails & Forest Sanctuaries

Pillar 05 / Exchange

Apprenticeships & volunteering

Learn traditional farming or craftsmanship, or contribute to conservation and community projects, through hands-on cultural exchange.

Focus: Community Forestry & Agronomy

Each activity is a different lens on the same culture. Together they give participants knowledge, friendships and memories that last well beyond the trip.
