Why Roam Beyond
The difference between visiting the Himalayas and actually knowing it
Every year, thousands of travellers book a Sikkim or Darjeeling package through a large national tour operator. What most don’t realise is that these companies rarely operate on the ground themselves. Your itinerary is designed in a head office hundreds of kilometres away, then handed to a local vendor you will never meet, running a fixed script alongside dozens of other groups that week.
Roam Beyond is different for one simple reason: we don’t subcontract Sikkim. We are Sikkim.
Our discipline
Since 1978
The Native Standard
Direct field care and no subcontracting. Every mountain transfer, high-pass permit and monastic audience is arranged directly from Gangtok.
- Direct operational custody from arrival to departure.
- Scheduled groups capped at 16 guests.
- Resident field presence across Sikkim.

The founder
Born of this land, not just operating in it
Pema Tsewang Topgyal, Founder
Roam Beyond is led by Pema Tsewang Topgyal, an engineer by qualification who chose a different calling: sharing the land, culture and spiritual heritage of his native Sikkim with the world. His lineage traces back to the head lama of Pemayangtse Monastery, one of Sikkim’s most revered institutions.
He was educated at St. Joseph’s in Darjeeling, then a middle school in California, where he earned the rank of Star in the Boy Scouts of America. He later returned to India for his engineering degree and deepened his grounding with a summer programme at the Naropa Buddhist Center in the USA.
Over two decades that blend of engineering discipline, global exposure and inherited cultural depth has taken him across North America, Europe and Southeast Asia, building the relationships and cultural fluency now woven into every Roam Beyond journey.

What makes Roam Beyond rare is the combination of deep local roots and a global vantage point. We understand what a well-travelled, discerning guest expects (the comfort, the pacing, the level of service) without losing the authenticity that comes from being genuinely local.
You get international polish, delivered by people who actually belong here.

Tailored
Curated, not mass-produced
Large national operators build itineraries for hundreds of departures a year across dozens of destinations; Sikkim is one line on a long menu. At Roam Beyond, Sikkim and the Eastern Himalaya are the entire menu. Every itinerary is personally curated, informed by direct relationships with monasteries, local guides, homestay families and artisans.
This is the difference between a trip that checks boxes and a trip that changes how you see a place.
Eastern Himalaya focus
Accountable
Direct, personal, accountable
When you travel with Roam Beyond there is no layer of subcontracted logistics between you and the people responsible for your experience. Founder-led and locally rooted, we are personally accountable for every detail, from the permits for Nathula to an unscripted cup of tea with a local family.
- Zero brokerage layers
- Direct native line

Government-recognised. Locally rooted. Globally minded. That’s not a tagline; it’s how we’ve always operated.
